The Easiest Way To Track Your Competition

I borrowed that “marketing theft” concept from an amazing performance marketer I used to work with (who’s kind of responsible for what we’re building). When I first met him, I thought he’d always be writing copy, directing designers, A/B testing offers. But it turned out he spent hours manually looking up competitors in Facebook’s Ad Library, saving their ads in a folder, and comparing them against other companies. He also had a network of friends who’d text him if they saw a new ad from a company on his watch list. His dream was to hire someone just to listen to podcasts and track ads.

When I asked why he spent so much time on this, his explanation was simple: “These are super successful companies spending millions of dollars on campaigns. Using Ad Library I can see everything. Why wouldn’t I want to learn from them?”

Of course, it seemed obvious: If you want to perform with the best, you have to know what they’re doing.

The problem? It took forever to comb through ad libraries, look at ad variants, organize them into spreadsheets, and draw conclusions. I know, because he griped about it constantly.

It’s tedious work, but crucial. I learned the hard way when I was building social ads for my concepts. I thought I could figure out how to reach an audience on my own. After a few weeks of disappointing CACs, I tried my colleague’s approach. Soon I was hitting my goals. I wasn’t just blindly copying others, of course — just as a great artist doesn’t literally walk off with another artist’s canvas. You’re informed and inspired by your peers. It’s a humbling experience. But your CAC will thank you.
